7th Grade:
DUE WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 5TH 2019
Become a mini-expert on one genetic disorder that affects the human population and share your findings with your peers. To accomplish this, you will:
- Research a genetic disorder
- Present your findings to the class.
You may use books, encyclopedias, and the Internet for information.
Be sure to record the source information to be accurate. No copying directly out of the source of information (this is plagiarism and may result in an "F" for your grade!)
1) Pick which disorder you would like to research. It does not need to be one that you already know well, but make it one that interests you. You will need to become familiar with this genetic disorder in only a few days.
2) Research your disorder. Use the "questions to guide you" to help organize your data. You need facts about your genetic disorder; make sure you are using reliable sources! You may start with your textbook for basic information, but you will need to expand this to encyclopedias or Internet sites for more specific information.
Questions to help you research:
- What is the name of your disorder? Does it go by an abbreviation or a more common name?
- Who discovered your disorder? When did they discover it? What led to their discovery?
- What is the incidence or rate of occurrence for your disorder? Is it more common among certain ethnic groups? Does it only affect one sex? (be sure to include a graph or table of this data)
- What are the symptoms or hallmarks of the disorder? Are there physical characteristics? Mental characteristics? Intellectual difficulties? Developmental delays?
- how would a person know if they had the disorder? Is there genetic testing? Are there visual identifiers?
- What are the challenges associated with the disorder? When do they occur (at birth, at puberty, at any time)?
- What treatments are available for this disorder? Is it curable? Can it be managed?
- What support services and/or research groups are available to help families with a member who has this disorder?
- Any other important facts or information we should know? Why should we learn about this disorder? Why is knowledge important?
3) Find or draw pictures related to your disorder.
- Include pictures of the physical traits caused by the disorder
- Include a Punnett square or pedigree to show inheritance patterns
- Include graphs or tables documenting rates of incidence.
- The minimum requirement is five (5) pictures. There is no maximum requirement.
