I CAN: DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF COTTON TO THE ECONOMY OF THE SOUTHERN STATES.

FOCUS QUESTION: PREDICT: WHY DO YOU THINK THE NORTHERN ECONOMY WAS MOSTLY BASED ON INDUSTRY (FACTORIES) AND THE SOUTHERN ON AGRICULTURE (FARMING)? PUT THE ANSWER ON THE STREAM PAGE!

Good morning, scholars! I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!

Last week was so exciting as we talked about westward expansion and the rise of industrialization (factories) in the North. As the population expanded, there were innovations (inventions) in transportation, communication and agriculture. Your participation in the Google Meet sessions was phenomenal!

This week we are going to focus on the South, we had a much different economy and way of life than the North. The southern economy relied on the harvesting of the large-scale harvesting of crops like cotton and tobacco. The evil institution of slavery was in full effect, despite the resistance of northern states.

As the nation expanded westward, southern and northern states fought bitterly over the issue of slavery.
This fierce disagreement would eventually lead to the Civil War.

We have to so much to discuss and learn this week. Let's keep up the awesome momentum!

Mr. Dayan:
8th Grade:
All 8th Grade Classes will Engage in a Google Meet at their Normally Scheduled Time
Topic: Cold War
Historical Background
After World War II, the United States, and the Soviet Union became the two main world powers. Both created alliances to support their worldviews. NATO was the alliance that supported the United States, and the Warsaw Pact was the alliance that supported the Soviet Union.

The USSR and the U.S.A. emerged from World War II as superpower rivals. This rivalry took various forms over the next 45 years during the Cold War, encompassing technology, both positive (space race) and negative (arms race); consumer culture (Kitchen Debate); and sports (Olympics).
Due to Mutual Assured Destruction, or the threat of Nuclear Annihilation, the United States and the Soviet Union fought and competed against each other in many ways.

Assignment Instructions:
Short Response Writing (RACE)
Describe how the rivalry between the USSR and the U.S.A. was evident (clear) during the Space Race?
Provide two pieces of textual evidence to support your answer.
