Good morning, scholars! I'm really looking forward to our GOOGLE MEET session today.

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SENECA FALLS CONVENTION (1848).

FOCUS QUESTION: : STATE YOUR OPINION: WHY DO YOU THINK THE UNITED STATES HAS NEVER HAD A FEMALE PRESIDENT?

Today in our GOOGLE MEET session we will discuss the Women's Movement of the mid 1800s. Leaders such as Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Stanton fought bravely for women to have important rights (like voting) and an increased role in society. They often faced stiff resistance from those that did now want women to have an advances.

One of the most important moments of the Women's Movement was the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848.
Women's "suffrage" (the ability to vote) was one of the main topics pushed forward at the convention. A "Declaration of Sentiments" was created at the convention and was modeled after the "Declaration of Independence."

I look forward to having rigorous discussions about the Women's Movement today in our GOOGLE MEET session today!

EXIT QUESTION: WHAT SIMILARITIES DID THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT HAVE WITH THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT?

I Can: Analyze the power of lyrics and poetry to understand the powerful forces of social change during the 1960s.

Historical Background:
“It’s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come.” ~ Sam Cooke, R&B, Gospel, and pop singer.
Those words made up the chorus to Sam Cooke’s passionate track; “A Change is Gonna Come.”

The participants of the civil rights movement recognized the power of song and performance, and utilized this form of cultural communication in their quest for equal justice under law.

The popular music of the early 1960s offers a unique and engaging entry point into the politics surrounding equal rights in mid-twentieth-century America.

The goal of this assignment is to better understand the counterculture revolution of the 1960s.  You will analyze the power of lyrics and poetry to understand the powerful forces of social change during that influential era.

Good morning, Scholars! Today I will be participating in professional development. Please carefully read the text that I have provided and answer the questions. Remember to use complete sentences and fully explain the answers in your own words using details. Good luck--I'm really proud of all of you! Mr. Bruning

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE START OF THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT IN THE MID 1800s.

FOCUS QUESTION: PREDICT: IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU THINK WOMEN FACED DISCRIMINATION IN THE 1800s?

Yesterday, we discussed the importance of the great abolitionist leader, Frederick Douglass.

Today, we are going to examine how activists such as Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought for women's rights in the mid 1800s. Abolitionist hero Frederick Douglass and other men also joined the cause for women to have an increased role in society, including the right to vote.

Right here in our home state of New York, the Seneca Falls Convention (1848) became a historic moment in the struggle for women's equality. The rights women have today can be directly linked to the heroic actions of leaders of this movement in the 1800s.

EXIT QUESTION: DO WOMEN IN 2020 STILL FACE DISCRIMINATION IN AMERICAN SOCIETY? EXPLAIN.

I Can: Examine opposing United States perspectives surrounding the Vietnam War.
Historical Background:
From 1964-1972, the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the history of the world made a maximum military effort , with everything short of atomic bombs , to defeat a nationalist revolutionary movement in a tiny, peasant country and failed.

The U.S. turns out as the big loser in Vietnam, and the history books must reveal this.

This was the longest war the United States fought in the 20th century, and it  also became the most unpopular. It resulted in nearly 60,000 American deaths and in an estimated  two million Vietnamese deaths.

It was the first clear defeat to the global American empire formed after World War II. The defeat was administered by revolutionary peasants abroad, and by an astonishing movement of protest at home.

By the end of the Vietnam war, 7 million tons of bombs were dropped on Vietnam, more than twice the total bombs dropped on Europe and Asia in World War II

HUMAN BEINGS PREAILED OVER TECHNOLOGY

The whole Vietnamese people, animated by a common purpose, are determined to fight to the bitter end

BACKSTORY:

• A Revolutionary Movement led by a Communist named Ho Chi Minh Sought independence from Colonial French rule.

• One day in June 1963, a Buddhist monk sat down in the public square in Saigon and set himself afire as a protest to the South Vietnamese Diem regime's discriminatory Buddhist laws. He hope to show that to fight all form of oppression, a sacrifice must be made.

• Vietnam was split in two between Communist North Vietnam, led by Ho Chi Minh, and Democratic South Vietnam, led by Ngo Dinh Diem until his assassination in 1963

• Minh and the Vietcong from the north invaded the south in an attempt to unify the country as a Communist state.

• Ho Chi MInh issues a Declaration of Independence. It borrowed from the American Declaration of Independence, and began: "All men are created equal. They are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Just as the Americans in 1776 had listed their grievances against the English king, the Vietnamese listed their complaints against French rule.

• The United States reacted in line with the philosophy of the Truman Doctrine of Communist Containment and carried out an escalating series of military measures to keep the South Democratic.

• August 1964, President Johnson used a murky set of evidence in the gulf of Tonkin, off the coast of North Vietnam, to launch full scale war.

The Greatest Antiwar Movement the Nation had ever Experienced

• By early 1968, the cruelty of the war began touching the conscience of many Americans.

• Lyndon Johnson escalated the war and failed to win it.

• Poisonous sprays were dropped by planes to destroy trees - Vietnamese mothers reported birth defects

• Muhammad Ali refuses to serve

• First sign of opposition came out of the Civil Rights movement. The experience of black people with the government led them to distrust any claim that it was fighting for freedom

• Sometimes to be silent is to lie

• The climax Protest came in the spring of 1970 when President Nixon ordered the invasion of Cambodia. At Kent State University in Ohio, on May 4, when students gathered to demonstrate against the war, National Guardsmen forced into the crowd. Four students were killed.

Ho Chi Minh (Prime Minister North Vietnam) - THE VOICE OF VIETNAMESE INDEPENDENCE

• Capable of  mounting effective resistance over either the Japanese or the French

• Ho was the only Vietnamese wartime leader with a national following

• Assured himself wider appeal after overthrowing the Japanese in 1945

• Established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam

• For a few weeks in September 1945, Vietnam was for the first time and only time in its modern history free of foreign domination, and united from north to south under Ho Chi Minh

• Viet -Cong units have the recuperative powers of the phoenix

• Viet-Cong units amazing ability to maintain morale far exceeded the democratic forces

U.S. Motives:

• Stop Communism in Asia

• Adhere to the "Domino Theory", that like a row of dominos, if one country fell to Communism it would create a ripple effect.

• The United States quickly established South Vietnam as an American sphere. Set up Government in Saigon (South Vietnam)

• Southeast Asia attractive and appealing due to rich natural resources. This is not the language that was used by President Kennedy in his explanations to the American public. He talked of Communism and freedom.

Good morning, Scholars! I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. Remember that Memorial Day is an important remembrance of the sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States military.

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE WRITINGS OF ABOLITIONIST FREDERICK DOUGLASS.

FOCUS QUESTION: WHAT ADJECTIVE WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO DESCRIBE THE ABOLITIONISTS OF THE 1800s? EXPLAIN. PUT THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION ON THE STREAM PAGE!!

We ended last week by discussing the bravery of abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman. They faced faced intense hostility from those in the South (and the North) that fought to protect slavery.

Today we are going to analyze an excerpt from the autobiography (a primary source) of the great American hero and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass. Douglass was born a slave and risked his own safety by not only teaching himself to read and write, but also escaping to the North. It is an incredible American story. Frederick gives much insight into the hardships and brutality of his life as a slave, before escaping to freedom.

EXIT QUESTION: IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU THINK FREDERICK WAS AN INSPIRATION TO MANY IN THE 1800s AND EVEN NOW--IN 2020? EXPLAIN WITH DETAILS.

Good morning and Happy Friday scholars! I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

Let us remember the brave men and women of the United States military and also the courageous front-line workers like doctors, nurses, transit, firefighters, police, EMT, and grocery store clerks who have been there for all of us. We salute and honor them this holiday weekend!

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE REACTION TO THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES.

FOCUS QUESTION: PREDICT: HOW DO YOU THINK MOST NORTHERNERS REACTED TO THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT? PUT YOUR ANSWER ON THE STREAM PAGE!!

This week we have examined the role that reformers and abolitionists played in shaping the United States in the early to mid 1800s. These brave men and women often times put themselves in dangerous situations to try to make the country a better and more fair place.

Abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison, Sarah and Angelina Grimke, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman risked their own safety to try to end the evil institution of slavery.

How did most Americans react to their heroic efforts? We will soon find out in today's reading!

EXIT QUESTION: IF YOU HAD LIVED IN THE UNITED STATES IN THE MID 1800s WOULD YOU HAVE BEEN AN ABOLITIONIST KNOWING THAT DOING SO WOULD CONTAIN MANY RISKS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?

Good luck on today's assignment and have a wonderful holiday weekend. I'm proud of you! Mr. Bruning

Focus Question:  Predict: What type of treatment do you think many abolitionists faced as they fought for freedom for African Americans in the 1800s?

Yesterday we discussed how the origins of the abolitionist movement stretched back all the way to before the American Revolution.  Yet, despite this fact, the nation's two most famous documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution made no mention of the evil institution of slavery.

Today, we will examine the role that abolitionist heroes like William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth played in trying to bring about an end to slavery.

  • In the 1950s the feeling was that it was more important for a woman to secure a husband than a college degree.
  • Being a single mother was totally unacceptable in the public eye in the 1950s.
  • Couples walked down the aisle by the young age of 19 and tended to start families immediately

Good morning, scholars! I'm really looking forward to our GOOGLE MEET session today!

I Can: Describe the importance of the reform movements of the mid 1800s in the United States.

Focus Question: What professions (jobs) are most important in helping the less fortunate in society?

This week we are focusing on the "reformers" of the mid 1800s. These are people who tried to make changes they thought would improve the country and make things more fair for all. Yesterday, we discussed the role of religion and the attempts by some to create a "utopia" (perfect society). Also, we examined the temperance movement, which was designed to limit or eliminate the drinking of alcohol in the country.

Today we are going to zone in on those that wanted to reform the education system in the mid 1800s to allow all Americans the ability to learn.

There were also many artists and authors who attempted to enlighten the American public through their work. I look forward to discussing all of these topics today!!

Exit Question: Who are the American reformers in 2020 that you feel are trying hardest to bring about positive change in the United States?

Topic: Cold War
I Can: Explain how the United States Confronted Communism in Cuba
Historical Background:Cuba is 90 miles from the U.S. and in 1959 it became communist when Fidel Castro took power.
Many Cubans who disliked Castro left Cuba and became exiles in the U.S.
The U.S. government did not want a communist country so close to its borders; in 1961 they trained, armed, and paid for a group of Cuban exiles to invade and try to overthrow Castro.
The Bay of Pigs invasion was a failure – most of the exiles were captured or killed.  The incident wound up being an embarrassment for the United States.
 Castro's revolution in Cuba (1959)
  • Overthrows American backed dictator Bautista
  • Castro a direct threat to American business interests (United Fruit)
  • U.S. cuts down on Sugar buying from Cuba, on which Cuba's economy depended
  • Soviet Union swoops in immediately agrees to buy all the sugar America would not buy
  • Cuba no longer the good neighbor
  • Eisenhower (1960) authorizes C.I.A. to arm and train anti-Castro Cuban exiles for a future invasion
  • C.I.A trained force lands at the Bay of Pigs (1961)

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE ROLE THAT RELIGION PLAYED FOR MANY AMERICANS IN THE MID 1800s.

FOCUS QUESTION: WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK RELIGION PLAYS IN THE LIVES OF AMERICANS IN 2020?
PUT THE ANSWER ON THE STREAM PAGE.

Last week we covered so much ground. We focused on the differences in the economies between the North and the South.

We took a very close look at the institutions and economy of the South. In addition, we discussed the hardships and cruelty that the enslaved populations of the South endured.

The tension over the issue of slavery would lead to Civil War between the North and South only a few years down the road.

This week we are going to examine the role that "religion and reform" played in the development of the nation. Many groups felt that changes and improvements needed to made in the United States in the mid 1800s. I look forward to discussing these issues with you this week!

EXIT QUESTION: IF YOU WERE PUT IN CHARGE OF CREATING A PERFECT COMMUNITY (UTOPIA) IN THE MID 1800S WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE? DESCRIBE. PUT THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION ON TODAY'S DOCUMENT.

Good morning and Happy Friday scholars! I've been impressed with all the critical thinking and discussions we've had over the last few days. Let's finish strong as we close out another great week!

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE EFFORTS TO RESIST AND ESCAPE SLAVERY BY HEROES LIKE HARRIET TUBMAN.

FOCUS QUESTION: SPIRALING BACK: WHAT WAS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ECONOMIES OF THE NORTH AND SOUTH DURING THE MID 1800s? PUT THE ANSWER ON THE STREAM PAGE!

This week we've been discussing the characteristics of the Southern economy and the hardships and cruelty endured by the enslaved population of the South.

Today we are going to examine the resistance to slavery by figures such as Nat Turner and Harriet Tubman.

Remember that the issue of slavery lead to rising tension between the North and South. This would in a few years lead to the United States Civil War (1861-1865).

EXIT QUESTION: PRETEND THAT YOU HAVE BEEN INVITED TO CONGRESS TO MAKE A PROPOSAL THAT HARRIET TUBMAN SHOULD HAVE A FEDERAL HOLIDAY IN HER HONOR. WHAT WOULD BE THE MAJOR POINTS OF YOUR PRESENTATION? PUT THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION ON TODAY'S DOCUMENT!

i'M REALLY PROUD OF YOU, SCHOLARS! GOOD LUCK ON TODAY'S LESSON! MR. BRUNING

Mr. Dayan:
8th Grade:
Topic: Cold War (McCarthyism & The Red Scare)

Americans’ fear of Communism throughout the world during the Cold War led to efforts to contain it on the home front.

Truman administration wasted no time creating an atmosphere of crisis and the Cold War.
• Established a climate of fear
• A hysteria about Communism

Enter McCarthyism: His accusations sparked an anti-Communist hysteria and national search for “subversives” that caused suspicion and fear across the U.S. Merely being accused by McCarthy caused people to lose their jobs and reputations.

Distraction was similar to Post 9/11. McCarthyism and "The Red Scare" Left Pressing Looming Domestic Issues in Limbo. Keeping the country secure and safe from Communism was the MAIN FOCUS.

In the Meantime:
Minimal Advancements for:
• Blacks
• the Economy

This exaggerated paranoia or hysteria created by Senator McCarthy Justified an Aggressive Foreign Policy.
• The country seemed sedated and under control in the 1950's.
• The calm before the storm (the radical activism 60's)

Today's Assignment: Red Scare/McCarthyism Image Analysis Worksheet:
Instructions:
1. Analyze "Red Scare" Political Cartoons (PDF)
2. Respond to the Worksheet Prompts using your Observations and Evidence from the Images.

Good Morning, Scholars! I'm really looking forward to our GOOGLE MEET session today.

I CAN: DESCRIBE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE FOR THE ENSLAVED POPULATION OF THE SOUTH.

FOCUS QUESTION: DO YOU THINK NORTHERN STATES COULD HAVE DONE MORE TO STOP THE GROWTH OF SLAVERY IN THE SOUTH DURING THE EARLY AND MID 1800s?

We have had many great discussions this week about the life in the South in the early to mid 1800s. We have examined the economy, transportation, communication as well as other components of life in the South.

Today we will discuss the hardships and brutal treatment of the enslaved population of the South during the 1800s. We will look at the role family life, cultural traditions and religion played in the lives of slaves in the South. We will also discuss how the evil institution of slavery would lead to Civil War between the North and South. The divided nation would soon face a long and difficult road in the coming years.

EXIT QUESTION: DO YOU THINK THE LIVING RELATIVES (2020) OF FORMER SLAVES (FROM THE 1700S AND 1800S) SHOULD BE PAID REPARATIONS (PAYMENTS) BY THE GOVERNMENT TO MAKE UP FOR THE PAIN AND SUFFERING THAT WAS ENDURED DURING THAT TIME PERIOD?

I LOOK FORWARD TO DISCUSSING ALL OF THESE ISSUES WITH YOU TODAY! MR. BRUNING
