Good morning, scholars! I'm really looking forward to our GOOGLE MEET session today!

I CAN: DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF THE SOUTHERN ECONOMY IN THE MID 1800S.

FOCUS QUESTION: TO WHAT EXTENT DO YOU THINK CLIMATE (OVERALL WEATHER) PLAYED A ROLE IN HOW THE ECONOMIES DEVELOPED IN THE NORTH AND SOUTH DURING THE 1800S?

We have had so many meaningful lessons and discussions about how the United States developed in the 1800s as the country greatly expanded and pushed westward.

Last week we focused on the industries and economy of the North and this week we are zoning in on the South.

While factories sprang up in many parts of the North (especially the Northeast), the South revolved mainly around agriculture and the detestable institution of slavery. "King Cotton" was the main crop of the Deep South. The invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney (1793) greatly increased the productivity of cotton processing. This invention provided cotton for the textile factories of the North, but also greatly increased the need for labor in the South.

In today's lesson we will discuss the economy of the South and make comparisons and connections with that of the North.

As the nation pushed west and many inventions helped the nation grow, tension over the issue of slavery escalated between the North and South.

I look forward to discussing all of these issues with you in our GOOGLE MEET SESSION TODAY!
