I CAN: DESCRIBE INNOVATIONS THAT ENABLED THE UNITED STATES TO GROW AS A NATION.
FOCUS QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER HISTORY'S MOST IMPORTANT INVENTION? WHY?
PUT YOUR ANSWER TO THE FOCUS QUESTION ON THE STREAM PAGE.
READING PREVIEW:
In the mid 1800s, the United States continued to expand westward. New cities were created and the population skyrocketed!
Yesterday, in our GOOGLE MEET SESSION we spoke about how advances like the rise of factories in the North and new modes of transportation allowed the country to grow and push West. Factories increased the ability to make important goods using new technology like sewing machines and looms for weaving cloth. Travel efficiency was increased due to the creation of steamboats, clipper ships, canals and railroads. Goods were now able to be transported to growing population centers in the Midwest and West.
Today, we are going to discuss how innovations in communication and farming pushed the nation forward.
Cell phones are a way of life in the United States and worldwide today. Yet, today you will focus on how the invention of the TELEGRAPH using MORSE CODE enabled people to communicate in a way never before thought possible. The growing nation needed a greater food supply and advances and in plowing and harvesting were created. The spirit of invention was thriving and it was an exciting time for the country!
Focus on closely analyzing the reading text and using complete sentences with details for your answers!
Keep up the great work--I'm proud of you! Mr. Bruning
