We have been learning about the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) this week.
We learned our body function with each system intact and balanced for us to be healthy.

So today we are going to look at if some goes wrong with our Nervous System.

Summary:
The nervous system can be affected by infections, such as encephalitis or meningitis.
Other nervous system diseases include tumors, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and migraines.

Instructions:
Read and Read the article attached>

Yesterday we took a closer look at the central nervous system (CNS) which is the largest part of the nervous system. It includes the brain and the spinal cord. The bony skull protects the brain. The spinal cord is protected within the bones of the spine, which are called vertebrae. The day previous to yesterday we learned about Neurons and Nerve Impulses. Neurons are usually classified based on the role they play in the body.
We also classified the main types of neurons are sensory neurons and motor neurons. Sensory neurons carry nerve impulses from sense organs and internal organs to the central nervous system. Motor neurons carry nerve impulses from the central nervous system to organs, glands, and muscles—the opposite direction.

Today we are going to learn all about the Peripheral Nervous System

Summary: The peripheral nervous system (PNS) contains all the nerves in the body that are found outside of the central nervous system. They include nerves of the hands, arms, feet, legs, and trunk. They also include nerves of the scalp, neck, and face. Nerves that send and receive messages to the internal organs are also part of the peripheral nervous system.

Today we are going to Learn more about the nervous systems Neurons and Nerve Impulses. ON GOOGLE MEET.

Summary

Neurons, or nerve cells that carry nerve impulses, are made up of the cell body, the axon, and several dendrites.
Signals move across the synapse, the place where the axon of one neuron meets the dendrite of another, using chemicals called neurotransmitters.

Today we will explore a parasite which causes a disease:What's In Your Blood?
Malaria is a major infectious disease with over 300 million new cases each year. That's equivalent to almost the entire population of the USA becoming infected every year. Learn about the latest efforts to understand the parasite which causes the disease, and how genetics is increasing our understanding of malaria.

Malaria - Natural Selection and New Medicine from AMNH

A disease caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
The severity of malaria varies based on the species of plasmodium.
Symptoms are chills, fever, and sweating, usually occurring a few weeks after being bitten.
People traveling to areas where malaria is common typically take protective drugs before, during, and after their trip. Treatment includes antimalarial drugs.

2. How does malaria spread in the human body? Why does this make mosquitoes an effective mode of transport?
3. How many of these cities would it take to equal the number of children who die annually of malaria?
4. How does malaria spread in the human body?
5. Why does this make mosquitoes an effective mode of transport?
6. How has the malaria parasite responded to people being treated with drugs for malaria? How may having molecular information about the parasite help this situation?
7. Why are blood diseases common in the tropics? How can this situation be explained by natural selection?
8. What is the major agent of selection on the malaria parasite? How will this information aid in the formation of vaccines?

Yesterday we learned about infectious disease and pathogens. We Listed common causes of infectious diseases. We distinguish between a bacterium, a protozoa, and a fungi.
We also started two discussion threads to prevent and figure out how infectious diseases are spread. Many students did an excellent job writing and discussing with their peers.

In class we also learned that good bacteria in our stomach help with digestion and kill other bacterias that are bad for us. The bacteria in our stomachs is an example of a natural cure for pest bacteria that our bodies do not need.

Today we are going to be looking at natural underground microorganisms found in caves to find out if these organisms can cure human diseases.

1. Explain why caves are a unique environment to look for living organisms used to make drugs.
2. Why do scientists feel that environments which encourage microbial competition are good places to look for drugs?
3. What sorts of clues do researchers look for to identify potential microbial colonies in caves?
4. What two factors determine the biological activity of a compound? How does this help explain how some drugs can mimic natural compounds?
5. What is one basic advantage natural compounds have over wholly synthetic compounds in the search for new drugs?
6. What are "pool fingers"? What do they teach us about microbial lives in caves?

SummaryFor the past two week we have been learning about viruses and things that make us sick. We have studied and investigated many ways to protect ourselves and our families.

Many students also did an excellent job writing about viruses in public service announcements.

Today we will learn about pathogens.
Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, fungi, protozoa, or viruses that can travel from one person to another. Infectious diseases can be spread by a vector, an organism that carries pathogens from one person or animal to another.

1. Read the article before answering the questions.
